This town is often accused of over-regulating. Brexiteers loved to wave that flag. Closing this year, I have decided to do a reality check and see if, when looking at the next Commission, we should only focus on implementation or indeed push for new regulations. Dear Commission, stick to your word and legislate on better ticketing https://www.transportenvironment.org/discover/dear-commission-stick-to-you-word-and-legislate-on-better-ticketing/ Fri, 29 Sep 2023 06:09:48 +0000 https://www.transportenvironment.org/?post_type=article&p=38363 As a good policy freak, I call Brussels home. A climate wishlist to the Commission https://www.transportenvironment.org/discover/a-climate-wishlist-to-the-commission/ Fri, 16 Dec 2022 17:36:23 +0000 https://www.transportenvironment.org/?post_type=article&p=34018 With the winter holidays approaching, that time of the year when we look back is here. In 2021, the Fit for 55 package created the ideal framework to reduce emissions in the transport sector: the phase-out of the combustion car, increased national climate targets and a new carbon pricing mechanism for ships and cars. In 2022, climate NGOs around the bloc worked hard to make sure that those...

The triple strike against the combustion engine car https://www.transportenvironment.org/discover/the-triple-strike-against-the-combustion-engine-car/ Fri, 17 Dec 2021 09:33:26 +0000 https://www.transportenvironment.org/?post_type=article&p=26448 While in Covid times it often seems as if time is standing still, it’s incredible how much has changed on climate this year. We started the year still reeling from the full on attack launched by the Commission in 2019 on national climate targets. Yet, somehow we ended up with a triple strike against oil and the internal combustion engine (ICE). As Christmas season is approaching...

Freight modal shift to rail can contribute to decarbonising land freight https://www.transportenvironment.org/discover/freight-modal-shift-rail-can-contribute-decarbonising-land-freight/ Wed, 05 Jul 2017 11:58:05 +0000 https://www.transportenvironment.org/discover/freight-modal-shift-rail-can-contribute-decarbonising-land-freight/ Increased rail freight modal share in the EU could reduce land freight emissions by 4% by 2050 compared to a business-as-usual scenario (see graph below). T&E has used its new European Union Transport Roadmap Model (EUTRM) tool to calculate the emissions reduction potential of modal shift. To achieve it, the share of rail freight in the EU would need to be increased from today’s 18% to 23%.
